Acylic on canvas 60x73cm Lakes... Lao Tzu (the mysterious founder of Taoism) supposedly said “Make your heart like a lake, with a calm, still surface, and great depths of kindness”. Sara Paxton, an actress, on the other hand is said to have said “I’m terrified to go in lakes because you can’t see the bottom, and not knowing what’s there watching you is really scary to me”. In some traditions lakes, remote and far from human business, are seen as doorways to the Otherworld. They are sacred places, thin places. Don’t we all feel something of that? Rumi wrote: “Who could be so lucky? Who comes to a lake for water and sees the reflection of the moon”. I’m just calling this painting ‘The Lake’ for now. Or ‘The lake of a thousand journeys’. The lake of a thousand dreams. “Becoming a lake has put a lot of things in perspective for me”. The poet Heather Christle said that, in a tweet ;-)
